Music and your film

Music is often a key part to any successful short film, however you MUST remember that all music in your film must have the appropriate copyright agreements/ license.

YOUR FILM WILL NOT BE SCREENED IF YOU DO NOT HAVE THE APPROPRIATE COPYRIGHT LICENSE.

A copyright agreement or license is simply a document from the author/ owner/ distributor/ of the work/ music, giving permission for its use.

With regards already released music/ songs, you will have to contact the relevant record company to obtain permission for the use of the music, whether it be in whole or part.(This can take 4-6 weeks, if not longer, so get it sorted ASAP)

We strongly encourage you to:

  • Produce your own music
  • Use original music produced by a friend/ local band/ local school (Clearance is much easier, cheaper and faster- it's also another way that we can support our friends in the music bizz)
  • Use Australian music
  • Go to APRA (Australasian Performing Rights Association) website for info about obtaining a license and also a list of easy to obtain Australian music www.apra.com.au
  • Use copyright free music- available from a variety of websites and music libraries
  • Not use popular or well known songs

Film Classification

Please ensure the basis of your film is of a standard that will allow us to screen it. The Flake Film Festival reserves the right to reject any film entry, which is thought to be inappropriate or distasteful to our audience.
The office of Film and Literature Classification (OFLC) allows the FFF a classification exemption which is the equivalent to a MA 15+ classification rating.
You can find these guidleines at www.oflc.gov.au
