About the Flake Film Festival

In loving memory..."BLAKEY"

The Flake Film Festival was started in 2003 as a tribute to young Jindabyne snowboarder Blake McGrath who sadly died in a snowboarding accident in 2001. He was only 17 years young.

The Flake Film Festival endeavors to support and promote Australia’s emerging filmmakers, writers, actors and producers by encouraging them to write and produce short films. "We also aim to inspire new filmmakers and are especially proud to be an accessible platform for first- time and hobby filmmakers.

We also have a separate category for budding young filmmakers under 21." Says Chook Festival Director.

To encourage NEW and unique films, each year the FFF selects a different theme or footmark. This theme/ word may be interpreted in any way the filmmaker wants, but must be somehow be creatively incorporated into the film.

The 2008 theme is LIGHT

Selected films are then shown through a series screening nights around the NSW Snowy Mountains to public audiences at venues in Jindabyne, Thredbo, Perisher and Cooma (with more venues, towns being added for Summer 08/09).

Audiences at each of the Snowy Mountains screenings are given the prestigious task of voting for the majority of prize winners. With a judging panel selected a few winners too!

The winning filmmakers receive prize packages including cash and prizes- such as film and production equipment, snow gear, holidays and other great products.

FFF is strongly supported by the local residents and seasonal workers and is also becoming known nationally. In recognition of the festival's success and community spirit, the Australia Day Council named the FFF as the Snowy Mountains "Event of the Year" in 2004! A fantastic achievement for a festival that started with no money and a whole lot of love.

The Flake Film Festival is organised and run by Director Anthony Trovatello with the assistance of the Flake Advisory Committee (FAC). The volunteer committee is made up of 20 members, from various industries and backgrounds. The FAC also includes the parents and brother of Blake. As a group the FAC help to advise, assist and promote the festival.

The Flake Film Festival also endevours to support the youth of the Snowy Mountains through assisting with the development of learning programs, activities and events which encourage future growth, development and positive social behaviour of our local youth.
We are actively involved in the organisation and co- ordination of various Youth events, workshops and other local activities designed for young people. We are extremely excited and look forward to positive developments and expansion of the Flake Film Festival in the future.

Blake McGrath Tribute Award

Each year, in Blake’s memory the Flake Film Festival presents the Blake McGrath Tribute award and sponsorship to a nominated young Snowy Mountains local. The festival and associated sponsors supply the recipient with a season lift pass to a NSW ski resort, snow riding equipment, snow board tuning . "Blake is sadly missed, but through the festival and tribute sponsorship his spirit lives and rides on each year- something he loved to do", says Rachel co founder says.
