JINDABYNE CARES COMMITTEE
Minutes of meeting held Wednesday 11 February 2009
Chair Jane Straney opened the meeting at 6.30 pm. Present: Matthew McBurney, Marty Timmins, Carole Thomas, Andrew Orford, Deborah Duffy, Rob Thomas, Tom Barry, John Shumack, Jane Straney, Gunther Propst, Andrew Rostron, Robyn Nolan, Chrissi Webb, Larissa Gibson, Dawn Lewis, Charles Lewis & Jason Cremmens.
Apologies: Kris Laird, Heather Hunter.
1) Housing:
Tom Barry: Director of Public Housing Client Services were not in need of emergency housing at present, however in colder weather they may take Jindabyne up on the offer.
The authorities were overwhelmed by the generosity of the town it was a fantastic offer, however they would like to leave it open in event of a weather change.
Robyn Nolan: Authorities were informed of Jindabynes infrastructure. It would be either Hume or Beechworth Shires that would take up the offers.
The available accommodation could be used as respite for fire fighters and emergency services.
Snowliner and Cooma Coaches can supply transport.
Police and Ambulance Officers need to be advised if there is an influx of people.
2) Education:
Andrew Rostron: Dormitory accommodation for 60 children is available at the Redlands Winter Campus
3) Media:
Jindabyne Cares web page: Has been linked to snowymountains.org.au.
Tom Barry is amending his media release.
4) Volunteers:
Young adults, Charles Lewis & Jason Cremmens put up their hands to go to assist in the clean up. They were advised to get in touch with the NSW Government Victorian bush fire appeal on 1800 811 700. Terry Chalk (electrician) is available to go south.
5) Donations:
By Thursday evening $5,000 for the Red Cross appeal, had been raised in one day at Nuggets. Thredbo Community is running a BBQ at 3pm on Sunday 16 February. The students in both Jindabyne schools are holding activities to raise funds.
6) Collection for Arthurs Creek community, Saturday 14th Feb. (See flyer)
Phone chargers, small toys, games, books for kids, teenagers/adults, goods for teenage amusement eg tennis balls, yo-yos and games
7) Immediate needs
Meeting advised that power boards, generators and jerry cans are required in the short term.
8) The meeting thanked Jane Straney for her initiative in setting up the committee.
9) Meeting closed at 7 pm. Next meeting to be held when needed. Addendum: Victorian Uniting Church is interested in the Accommodation.

A meeting was held at Horizons where community groups were invited to attend and have input on how our community can assist the communities affected by the Victorian Fires.

Mayor John Cahill chaired the meeting and after some discussions a committee was formed the original meeting was closed by the mayor and the committee held another meeting to establish objectives and processes.
Jane discussed sending letters to appropriate authorities to determine the current needs in regard to accommodation however it was accepted that the committee members continue to liaise with their current contacts, keeping the secretaries informed of these contacts.
The main priorities will be to determine what those affected want and how long they want it for.
Tom Barry was appointed as publicity officer and will organize a media release for tomorrow He and Robyn will have further information by tomorrow night. Tom will keep Don Killin informed.
It was suggested to have a community forum or at least a community notice board in place for the community to see what is happening Andrew Orford will organize a community book to be placed at Woolworths for community feedback and will keep the committee informed of progress.
Matthew McBurney suggested that as a donation toward fires that the Businesses of Jindabyne advertise in the paper and on radio as these media outlets are donating a great deal of time and advertising to the community in regard to fire assistance.

Facilities for further meetings were suggested they being: CWA Hall, SMGS, Horizons and the Neighbourhood Centre (Angie Corcoran)
The objective are to keep focused on preparing and organizing our town to accommodate residents from Victoria that may need short term/temporary accommodation. It is not the objective to raise funds or become a fund raising committee.
To meet immediate need Larissa Gibson and a small group of volunteers will be holding a collection of toys and some other items on Saturday 14th at the Memorial hall from 8.30 am 4pm and these will be sorted on Wednesday 18th February and a truck will be transporting these goods on Saturday 21st to Diamond Valley and in particular Arthurs Creek.
The meeting closed and the next meeting will be tomorrow night Wednesday 11th February at 6.30pm at Horizons
